Allion

A versatile bulb vegetable that comes in many varieties, colors and sizes. The most ubiquitous is the large, globular Scrub Allion, grown mainly around the Human settlement of Zephyr on Selubir, which generally grows to around the size of a human fist but can be grown under special conditions to up to four times as big. It grows directly on top of the ground and has a papery, vivid scarlet outer skin with many pungent white layers contained inside. Tall white stems grow straight up out of the top of the bulb, with small, circular leaves that flutter - usually bright orange - at the ends.

The white, salty and crisp stems and brightly colored and peppery leaves of the allion plant are traditionally used for livestock feed but have more recently been being used as a colorful and fashionable salad vegetable.

Other popular varieties include: Blood Allion, New Allion, Dal Allion, Pearl Allion and Stew Allion, though there are hundreds of varieties.

It is said that the allion evolved from a plant grown using a packet of seeds brought from Earth itself, but it has been so hybridized and modified that it is unknown just how much it might resemble the ancient vegetable, or whether this is true at all.
