The bumnuga is a massive percussion instrument, resembling a broad wooden hoop about two and a half meters tall. Taut, tanned vurbok hide, stripped of scales but often still dramatically striped in green and orange, is stretched across the round sides, providing two surfaces capable of producing a deep, hollow booming noise. Often played by two Ry'nari at a time, the bumnuga was traditionally used as a method of scaring prey from the bushes, and is common at tribal ceremonies.
