A large canine native to Paperweight, the waulb'in (or ulven as the Jin refer to it) is a nocturnal predator with thick shaggy grey-white fur, four long legs and three long and very bushy tails used both for balance when on the move, and extra insulation when at rest. Its long snout has a black nose, vice-like jaws full of sharp teeth, two ice-grey eyes and two large pointy, tufted ears. Its paws are large for a canine of its size, its webbed toes and splayed claws built to run at speed through the conifer needles of its native forests, across frosted tundras and even across soft snow without losing its sure footing.

Ulven are well known in Belaul folklore to be aggressive hunters and are said to be closely connected to starlight, inspiring a variety of folk tales, most notably inspiring the name given to Paperweight's auroras; Sk'dauldu-Sh'waulb'eya to the Belaul, or Aes-Uulvi Dao to the Jin Twice-Departed.
