Kovalar is located Barrak System and is the homeworld of the Shen race. Its capital is Janilyn, a highly advanced city known for being an interstellar transport hub.

Janilyn is the capital city of Kovalar, and is filled with high towers where space is a premium. There are eight Great Families which are really a lot more than blood relatives; they are more like small kingdoms where all the members are loyal to the family and are thus considered a part of it. A large portion of each family lives in its respective tower, but many live elsewhere throughout the city. They are not insular nor particularly competitive with each other.

Places of interest in Janilyn:
- Janilyn Starport: Shen crews are known for 100% on-time departures.
- The Elder Tower: seat of government and general info hub for the area.
- Medical complex: state of the art facility with some interesting research projects.
- The Tower of Ghi: the Ghi family is known for being most welcoming to outsiders, so their entire tower is open to the public.
- Sinseel Systems HQ: shipbuilding facility.
- Vuu market: within Market District, considered THE place to get your vuu on.

The Fields of Oranc are one of the few open wilderness areas on the entire planet. Wild vuu can be found here, and their survival is considered of high importance, so the area is closely protected and managed. There is a station staffed by Shen to educate visitors about the area.
