Incursions occur when a group of ships or creatures target a particular zone in space. By doing so they are opening themselves to being attacked, and attacking them will certainly improve your captaincy skills.
There are three levels of incursion: Easy, Medium and Hard. These can be viewed by using the command INCURSION LIST in space, with their locations visible on the INCURSION MAP.
