A hardy groundcover plant native to the hills of Paperweight, tanata roots are gnarled and ugly-looking tendrils of woody roots that tangle through any soil soft enough to sink its tendrils into, capped with sail-like fans of leaf structures that are dark and dusky red in color, varying from maroon to burgundy to mauve on a single plant. They can be very difficult to find in the wild, and would be at risk of extinction if not favored by the Belaul as a food crop - under the soil, the roots swell into starchy, purple-skinned tubers full of carbohydrates.

The milky sap of the tanata root can be used to make creams or ointments, and is often combined with gelatin to make glue. Once boiled however, the yellow flesh of the root is said to be fluffy and almost creamy, turning a snowy white when it is cooked to completion.
