The electric cello is a large four-stringed instrument resembling a guitar. The instrument produces a deep, resonating sound. It contains a built-in amplifier like other E-strings, while more expensive models can be programmed or adjusted on the fly using a SmartCore AutoTuner. Despite the length of the central column of neck, bridge and tail, many e-cels are lightweight for ease of use, a feature that often leads to a minimalist approach to the design of the instrument as a whole.
